About Your Guide

I’m a former media and Internet executive who can’t get enough of outdoor adventures. I love Seattle and the Northwest so much, I have moved here twice! I’ve lived in Seattle for 26 years, in two phases of my career, the last phase going on 21 years.

Award-winning travel writer Jonathan Raban, who moved to Seattle in 1990 from his native Britain, has made the observation that Seattle is the only major city where people move to be closer to nature. Having been to many world capitals, I can endorse that statement.

I have done extensive backcountry backpacking in the U.S. and Canada, including some of the most challenging and iconic trails: Canada’s West Coast Trail, Mt. Rainier’s Wonderland Trail, Zion and Paria Canyons in Utah and Arizona, Grand Teton Crest Trail, and sections of the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail, to name just a few. When I have completed one of these treks, my typical first thought is, “I want to do it again right now.”

Some hikers don’t care to hike the same trails repeatedly, but I believe what Heraclitus posited about rivers applies to trails as well—We can’t step in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and we’re not the same person.

I don’t believe the hikes I lead can be experienced in the same way twice, because the trail is never the same and you are not the same person I guided before. That’s what makes them adventures and not programmed tours.

For that reason, I do not offer direct online booking. I ask that you select an adventure that interests you and then consult the online calendar for open dates that suit your plans. Fill out an online reservation request. Or call or email with questions. I’ll respond within 24 hours and we’ll set up an adventure that meets your expectations.

If you have an idea for a fully custom hiking adventure not listed, I’d be delighted to work with you.

Happy trails!

P.S.  I am an enthusiastic supporter and member of the outdoor adventure and environmental organizations shown below. In addition to regular dues for these memberships, I contribute 1.5% of my profits to them. Please consider joining them.
